Introduction to Neurotransmitters

Functional Medicine

One must first understand what depression is before it can be fixed.

When discussing depression there are two main topics to be concerned with.

  1. The first one is your brain depression is when there is decreased action happening in the frontal lobe of your brain.
  2. The second thing to take into consideration is the hormones located in your brain, these little guys are called Neurotransmitters [noo r-oh-trans-mit-ers].

Your frontal lobe in your brain is located just behind your forehead. This part of your brain controls motivation, if you are not feeling as motivated as you used to be, it could be a decreasing function of your frontal lobe.

What else does the frontal lobe do?

    Planning/Goal Setting
    Motivation
    Attention
    Memory
    Impulse Control/ Judgment

When your neurotransmitters are out of balance in your brain it can cause feelings of depression. A prime example is a neurotransmitter called Serotonin when this hormone is low it can cause feelings of depression.

Five most common Neurotransmitters and the main responsibilities:

    Excited, Anxiety - Glutamate
    Happy, Sleep - Serotonin
    Happy, Memory - Dopamine
    Memory - Acetylcholine
    Adrenaline - Norepinephrine/Epinephrine

We will be releasing some diagrams highlighting each neurotransmitter discussing how they are used in the brain, and symptoms you can have when those neurotransmitters are out of balance.
